Johnston Medical Mall
The Johnston Medical Mall is located across the street from Johnston Health in Smithfield and is home to a variety of outpatient practices. The building is owned and operated by Johnston Health, and some of the offices are rented out to external practices and businesses.
The medical mall has a unique history. The building operated as a textile mill for 88 years. Burlington Industries, which was the last owner, closed the plant in October 1997. The administrator at then-Johnston Memorial Hospital envisioned the shuttered plant as an affordable space for outpatient services. Within a year or so, the hospital’s board of trustees had approved a development plan and, through the County of Johnston, bought the property for $2.7 million. After an extensive $15 million renovation, Johnston Medical Mall opened in January 2003. HealthQuest Fitness and Wellness Center, which is a service of Johnston Health, was the anchor. Through the years, the mall has gradually filled up with outpatient services and medical practices.
