Elsie Brown's Breast Cancer Story
Elsie Brown was prescribed radiation therapy following breast cancer surgery.
“This meant repeated weekly trips to a treatment center from her home near Lillington,” said her son, David. “Mother was dealing with enough stress just to that point—the news, the surgery and recovery, and then, travel on top of that.
“So I told her I would gladly drive her anywhere she wanted to go for treatment: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or even Winston-Salem. But she said she didn’t want to deal with the stress of traveling through heavy Triangle traffic, even as a passenger.
“When she learned Johnston Health’s Smithfield and Clayton campuses offered radiation therapy services in partnership with UNC Rex Healthcare, her decision was made.”
“It was as positive an experience as I could imagine,” said Elsie. “My trips to Smithfield were easy and stress free. The staff was very friendly and supportive. I often had family and friends volunteer to go with me. Six years later, I am doing well!
“To anyone requiring oncology treatment, I would recommend my path—on the road less traveled—with Johnston Health Radiation Oncology Services and their wonderful support team.”
