Johnston Medical Mall

The Johnston Medical Mall is no ordinary space. It’s got history, character and purpose. It’s also a place where people walk, come to learn, and grab lunch or a cup of coffee.

Until Burlington Industries closed its weaving operation in October of 1997, the building had operated as a textile mill for 88 years. Burlington was the property owner for 56 of those years.

Across the street, the administrator at then-Johnston Memorial Hospital envisioned the shuttered plant as an affordable space to grow services. Within a year or so, the hospital’s board of trustees had approved a development plan and, through the County of Johnston, bought the property for $2.7 million. After an extensive $15 million renovation, the Johnston Medical Mall opened in January of 2003 with HealthQuest Fitness and Wellness Center as its anchor. In the last 10 years, the mall has gradually filled the mall space with outpatient services and medical practices.
