A place of compassion, comfort and dignity
There’s a good chance that someone you know will need end-of-life care. And if that someone is a loved one such as a parent or spouse, then you know how difficult it can be to make decisions, especially when you’re feeling distressed or overwhelmed.
Hospice care is an option that focuses on palliative rather than curative treatments. The goal is to reduce pain and suffering while helping the patient to live as fully as possible. While true hospice care takes place at home, sometimes the strain of caring for a loved one is more than family caregivers can handle. That’s when a hospice inpatient center like the SECU Hospice House can assist.
In June of 2010, Johnston Health opened the SECU Hospice House on a peaceful setting a short distance from Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. A capital campaign by the Johnston Health Foundation raised more than $4.5 million from public and private sources to build the house.
The Hospice House is designed to look and feel like home. A full-service kitchen, dining and living room areas and outside patios give families a place to relax, gather with friends and share a meal.
All 18 patient rooms have separate heating and cooling units and in-suite baths, and sleeper sofas make overnight stays more comfortable. An interfaith chapel and meditation gardens offer spaces for quiet reflection.
At the Hospice House, patients have the support and care of an interdisciplinary team. Members include a physician, nurses, a nurse’s aides, social workers, bereavement counselors, volunteers and chaplains. The team works together to control the patient’s pain and to create a pleasant environment in which the patient can pass peacefully and with dignity.
The Hospice House accepts referrals from any hospice agency or physician in the region and beyond. Patients may be admitted regardless of age, race, creed, ethnic origin or ability to pay.
