Hematology & Oncology

Johnston Health collaborates with Duke University Health System to bring quality cancer care to Johnston County.

Johnston Hematology & Oncology: Now open in two locations.

Cancer care is best provided close to home in a comfortable, convenient setting with doctors and nurses who are part of the leading cancer programs in region. At Johnston Hematology & Oncology, patients can receive the majority of their cancer care and treatment of blood disorders in one convenient location.

Johnston Hematology & Oncology, led by Dr. Russell Anderson and Dr. Kathy Havlin, who hold faculty appointments at Duke University Medical Center, is the result of a unique collaboration that brings the latest therapies and treatment for patients with cancer and blood-related diseases.

Partnering with you
Quality health care is a partnership - the result of strong relationships built on mutual respect and honesty. If you've been diagnosed with cancer, you'll partner with our caring staff who will attend to your medical needs as well as the related needs of your family. Our team of experts will develop an individualized approach to treat your cancer. You and your doctor will discuss your complete condition and develop a treatment plan tailored to meet your specific needs. You'll also benefit from our collaborations with leading cancer programs: Duke physicians maintain a close tie to their colleagues at Duke in order to provide you with the best cancer care available. And with Johnston Health's collaboration with REX-UNC Healthcare, radiation oncology services are now available at Johnston Medical Center locations in both Smithfield and Clayton.

Become involved
To obtain the most benefit from your relationship with us, we encourage you to understand your health and take an active part in your care. Ask questions if you are concerned or unclear about anything. Before your visit, write down your questions or concerns so you won't forget anything. If you are having a problem with a prescribed medicine or treatment, please call us immediately rather than stopping treatment. Bring all medicines, including over-the-counter medicines, with you to every appointment. Bring a family member with you to participate in discussions, if you wish.

There are several things you can do that will help your first visit run smoothly:

  • Plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes early so we can complete your records
  • Bring your medical insurance card, Social Security card, medications, and any important medical records
  • If your managed care plan requires an authorization of your visit, please bring that with you
  • Inform us about any health problems, allergies and medications you are taking

If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our office as soon as possible to notify us. We ask that you give us at least 24 hours notice so that we can make your time available to another patient and reschedule you for a more convenient time. For more information or to make an appointment, call 919-989-2192.
