Johnston Hematology & Oncology

Johnston Health and Duke University Health System have joined forces to bring quality cancer care to Johnston County.
We believe that cancer care is best provided close to home in a comfortable, convenient setting with doctors and nurses who are part of the cancer programs of a leading academic medical center.

Johnston Hematology & Oncology, led by Dr. Russell Anderson who holds a faculty appointment at Duke University Medical Center, is the result of this unique collaboration that brings the latest therapies and treatment for patients with cancer and blood-related diseases.

Dr. Anderson specializes in treating patients with hematological disorders (which relate to blood, such as anemia) and oncologic diseases (also known as cancer).
At Johnston Hematology & Oncology, patients can receive the majority of their cancer care and treatment of blood disorders in one convenient location. The caring staff will attend to patients' medical needs as well as the related needs of their families.

Dr. Anderson believes in an individualized approach to treating his patients.
You, your referring physician, and Dr. Anderson will discuss your medical condition and develop a treatment plan tailored to meet your specific needs.
And of course, Dr. Anderson maintains a close tie to his colleagues at Duke in order to bring the best cancer care available to your community.

We believe that quality health care is a partnership - the result of a strong relationship built on mutual respect and honesty.

To obtain the most benefit from your relationship with us, we encourage you to understand your health and take an active part in your care.

  • Ask questions if you are concerned or unclear about anything. Before your visit, write down your questions or concerns so you won't forget anything.
  • Call us with your medical concerns. If you are having a problem with a prescribed medicine or treatment, please call us immediately rather than stopping treatment.
  • Bring all medicines, including over-the-counter medicines, with you to every appointment.
  • Bring a family member with you to participate in discussions, if you wish.

There are several things you can do that will help your first visit run smoothly:
  • Plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes early so we can complete your records.
  • Bring your medical insurance card, Social Security card, medications, and any important medical records.
  • If your managed care plan requires an authorization of your visit, please bring that with you.
  • Inform us about any health problems, allergies and medications you are taking.

If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our office as soon as possible to notify us.
We ask that you give us at least 24 hours notice so that we can make your time available to another patient and reschedule you for a more convenient time.
