About Us
Johnston Health is an evolving health care system serving Johnston County.
Its roots lie with Johnston Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1951 with 100 patient beds and a pledge to make health care accessible to all residents, regardless of ability to pay.
Through the years, the public hospital has expanded, adding patient rooms and services, and recruiting doctors—all to keep pace with the health care needs of a growing county.
Today, the hospital has a new name—Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield—to reflect its modern-day position as flagship of the health care system. The hospital’s commitment to providing quality care is stronger than ever.
In the summer of 2007, Johnston Health began the largest expansion in the hospital’s history—a $138 million investment in new buildings and equipment.
Johnston Medical Center - Smithfield
In Smithfield, the hospital is building a five-story tower that will include 101 patient suites, a larger cafeteria, modern operating rooms and a new intensive care unit. The $62 million project also includes remodeling areas of the original building.
Johnston Medical Center - Clayton
In Clayton--the eighth-fastest growing town in North Carolina, Johnston Health is building a $30 million medical center that will include an emergency department, diagnostic imaging and lab services, and two operating rooms. The medical center is under construction on N.C. 42 West near the intersection with Amelia Church Road.
On the same site, a three-story office building for doctors is also under construction.
More important, Johnston Health has plans to expand Johnston Medical Center – Clayton into a full-service hospital. Toward that end, the governing board of the hospital has asked state regulators for permission to move 27 acute care beds from Smithfield to Clayton.
In all, Johnston Health is licensed for 155 acute care and 20 behavioral health beds. With the tower expansion, the state has allotted 24 additional beds, bringing the total to 199.
Johnston Medical Center – Smithfield is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. With more than 200 physicians on staff, the hospital provides such medical specialties as internal medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, mammography, cardiology, urology, physical therapy, nuclear medicine, pediatrics, pulmonology, orthopedics, radiology, psychiatry, endoscopy, obstetrics and gynecology. Its 24-hour emergency department has physician coverage at all times.
Apart from inpatient services, the system operates a family care center at McGee’s Crossroads in western Johnston County and another in Kenly. It also has two urgent care centers, called QuikMed™, that operate in the Cleveland Community and inside the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield.
